Maw & Paw
There once was a giant so wild and tall that one of his eyes was the Moon and the other the Sun, and his long, flowing beard was all made of clouds. One night he fell asleep, and he slept for a hundred years. He dreamed of a heart so pure and filled with love that it seemed to be made out of gold, and he wanted to hold it and treasure it forever, but although it seemed so real that he could put his hand out and touch it, for all he tried, he could never quite reach it. When the hundred years had gone by, he woke up and found that the precious golden heart that he so longed for was nowhere in sight. He searched for it far and wide, and stood so straight and tall that the hair on his head got all tangled with planets and stars, but as far as he could see from this great height there was no golden heart in sight. So the giant grew sad and began to cry. He cried for a hundred more years, and his tears gathered together until they formed a vast salty sea. And after he had cried for a hundred years, he felt so empty inside that the beat of his heart began to echo within him like a drum, and it formed a rhythm that soon caused him to sing. He sang about the lovers that the Moon shined on at night, and the families and friends that the Sun shined on all day. He sang about the hopes and prayers and curses that rose up from everyone and joined the stars in the heavens, and he sang about his lost golden heart. He sang for another hundred years, and as he sang, his own heart grew hard, and it shone like the sun, until he had a heart of gold, which made him very happy. When dawn broke after the hundred years were over, there wasn’t a giant to be seen at all, but a towering mountain range on the spot where he had started to sing. The clouds from his beard still clung to the peaks, and the Sun and the Moon and the stars passed overhead. As for his heart of gold, it lay in the sea of tears, where it still beat like a drum. And the sea welcomed the rhythm, and broke into waves, and the waves of joyful tears grew into invisible waves of sound, and came into the hearts of the people who lived near the shore, and they opened their mouths to sing, and reached out their hands to play music.
